While most of America is at the stores splurging on Black Friday sales, I was working til 6a, went home to sleep, and then a leisurely lunch with the wife. As we're pulling out of the area, my wife points out Charlie's Comics, and I went in on a whim.
Maybe it was the hand of fate. I was told later that Charlie is a diehard DC guy and will give you an evil eye if you ask for a Marvel comic that is purposefully not on his shelves. A guy who has "Mad Love and Other Stories" on the shelf and a Nightwing in his display case is my kind of guy. Much more so for someone making a comic book that, at its heart, was born of a tongue in cheek Batman parody. Come on, he's a flying rodent! It's not a big stretch.
Charlie has been selling comics for over 25 years, runs the shop himself, reads every comic book that comes in his doors himself, and insists on meeting everyone face to face. I was originally going in to see if he would be interested in hosting a release party, but we ended up talking publishers (Ka-Blam! is common, and the company I was looking at, but he warned that a proof copy is highly advised -- as anyone should. Certain customers ordered prints without proof copies, expecting them to be ready for con, only to get prints that weren't sized right. This is a matter of detail that a lot of indie writers without experience are likely to make! Always get a proof copy first!), the aforementioned release party ("Of course! That's what the comic book industry is about, yes?"), and even invited me to join him on the FIRST SATURDAY OF FEBRUARY to a little charity shindig he throws now and again. So, yours truly will be there with markers and pencils and ink and things, taking commissions and drawing doodles and things, and maybe I'll even get some Sticks! comics done in the process, if I'm not working on Rats With Wings. Which I should be, but I know myself.
Because I also want to redo Sticks! at some point, and get it running again. Believe it or not, I have some already plotted out I just haven't drawn and posted yet. Not having a scanner kind of ruins your digital art output.
SO CHECK OUT CHARLIE'S! He seems like a really cool guy from what little I experienced of him, and I'm totally looking forward to bringing you guys Rats With Wings at last!
